Here is a great video of the Terry Ryan Newfoundland Growlers game highlights from the other night, something that everyone in the hockey world here really loved to see. Here’s a great recap video of the best highlights of Terry Ryan playing wth the Newfoundland growlers on his 47th birthday.
Who is Terry Ryan of the Newfoundland Growlers for those who don’t know?
Terry Ryan is a former professional hockey player who recently made a surprise return to professional hockey with the Newfoundland Growlers, a team in the ECHL, on his 47th birthday. This marked his first game of professional hockey in 21 years.
Ryan, a native of Mount Pearl, Newfoundland, was the 8th overall selection by the Montreal Canadiens in the 1995 NHL Entry Draft.
Ryan’s return to the ice was not a publicity stunt. The Growlers were dealing with a depleted roster due to illness and needed players. As per Hockey Canada, players who play in a professional game after January 10 are ineligible for the remainder of the amateur season, which meant that the Growlers’ usual emergency call-ups were not available.
Ryan, who still skates 4-5 times a week and plays a lot of ball hockey, was ready to help.
In his comeback game, Ryan fought with the Adirondack Thunder’s Zach Walker, a 25-year-old former Boston College player. Despite the Growlers’ 6-2 loss, Ryan’s return was celebrated by the crowd of more than 4,000 people, who gave him a standing ovation.
In addition to his hockey career, Ryan has gained a following as an actor, playing senior hockey player Ted Hitchcock in the Crave series Shoresy.
He also appears in the Canadian television comedy series ‘Shoresy’ as Ted Hitchcock and has a popular podcast. He is the author of the book ‘Tales of a First-Round Nothing: My Life as an NHL Footnote’, which was published in 2014.
