Newfoundland’s First True Whisky Ready In 2023

The Newfoundland Distillery Co is getting ever closer to its 2023 barrel tapping for Newfoundland’s first ever whisky. I’m quite excited to see what it’s like as it’s the first of its kind here, and this will kick off what is surely a long tradition of whisky being made here on The Rock.

This whisky is made from a combination of Newfoundland grown barley mixed with barley from PEI. This was the closest malted grain the Newfoundland Distillery Co could source for this first batch. This virgin whisky is being aged in specially made oak barrels since October 2020(from what I can tell) and they expect to get a really smooth whisky from it.

This whisky has undergone three distillations through their copper pot in Clarkes Beach, and I cannot wait to get a taste one day of their final product. I couldn’t gather just how much of this first batch was being made, so I imagine it will be a little while yet before I get my grubby hands on a bottle.

We wish the team over at the Newfoundland Distillery Co the best of luck and many more batches to come in the future. For now I’ll have to get by with my Chaga Rum and Aquavit on those cold and stormy nights. If you would like to learn more and follow their whisky journey you can follow them via the links below.
